Long Range Discrimination Radar

Clear Space Force Station - Alaska

Haskell Corporation along with our Anchorage, AK based joint venture partner Davis Constructors & Engineers, Inc. (HDJV), was selected by Lockheed Martin Corporation to construct the shelter and infrastructure to support operation of the Long Range Discrimination Radar (LRDR) sited at the Clear Space Force Base south of Fairbanks. The cutting edge LRDR has an enormous field of vision over huge swaths of the Pacific theater and is touted for its ability to quickly spot and identify complex components from intercontinental ballistic missile launches. The radar functions as the early warning system in the military’s missile defense strategy, with ground or sea-based projectiles launched to intercept incoming ICBM’s before they can strike their intended target.

The project involved the erection of 2200 tons of complex structural steel, installation of High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) shielding, hand rigging and welding out a 300 ton intricate network of internal seismic support steel, installation of an extensive electronic cooling water (ECW) mechanical and process piping system (8,000 LF of pipe), power and controls installation and a complete weather tight building enclosure system. Haskell personnel focused on the structural steel erection, process pipe fabrication & installation, and process equipment installation.

Additionally, Lockheed’s installation of the radar components required two temporary structures that could be erected and dismantled in short time frames. The structures had to be climate controlled and capable of housing a 600 ton hydraulic crane for radar assembly. The HDJV solution was constructing a clear span engineered tension fabric structure, 6 stories in height, complete with lighting, HVAC equipment and large overhead access doors.

The project was performed in sub-arctic conditions over two winter construction cycles. Additionally, close coordination was required with other ongoing construction contract work within the confines of an active and operating command & control Space Force base.

The video below, highlighting the project, was produced by the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA).
We will post project photos once they have been approved by the MDA.
